When we talk about gender discrimination, people often think it involves the opposite gender pushing women to the back seat and taking up all the available positions but this isn't often the case.

It's more worrisome when it is the girls and women themselves that accept whatever is thrown at them not because they are unqualified but because they've come to accept the stereotype the society has made them believe that women or girls shouldn't be found holding certain positions, careers or even found in certain places perceived to be exclusively for the men.

As we join the rest of the world to celebrate the international day of the girl child, it is important to remind my gender that every call for inclusion will continue to be unsuccessful if you don't start discarding those myth and stereotypes that tradition and the society has handed to us.

Don't be afraid to vie for any position as long as you are qualified and never accept to play the second fiddle role based on your gender except your are left with no other option.

Don't be the one slowing us down from winning this 'fight' against gender discrimination.

Your gender doesn't make you weak, unambitious and incapable of sitting in high positions.

To my Nigerian females, take up roles and responsibilities in your schools if you are a girl and to every woman, join politics, vie for positions reserved for the men and let the masses decide who they want there and not you.

Happy International day of the girl child. See you all at the top!
