SUBSTANCE ABUSE: THE QUIET PANDEMIC AMONG NIGERIAN YOUTH

Many questions often arise when it comes to the issue of the increase in substance abuse among our youth in Nigeria. One of the recurring questions is: ‘are we doing enough?’ Well, this question is one that doesn’t require many research to arrive at an answer because the rise in the number simply provides the answer. Let’s take a quick look at these reports. The United Nations Office on Drug and Crime in Nigeria reports that “14.4% (14.3 million) of people aged between 15 a

MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS: WE NEED TO DO MORE.

The month of May hosted the mental health awareness week and our focus at SACHEM was on how the mental of health of girls should be priority. Mental health is as critical to overall well-being as physical health, yet it is often misunderstood—especially when it comes to girls. There is a persistent, harmful belief that if a person isn’t visibly struggling or in crisis, they cannot be experiencing mental health challenges. This misconception is a dangerous barrier to supportin

WORLD HEALTH DAY: Focus On the Children.

Just a reminder that we all need to also priotize the health of our little ones. Ignore the misconceptions surrounding vaccines and take them for their regular immunization. Avoid self-medication and seek professional help when the need arises. Protect the lives of every child.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY: A Call to Protect Women and Girls in Nigeria

The landscape of safety for women and girls in Nigeria is increasingly concerning, marked by a disturbing rise in reports of sexual violence, abuse, and physical assault. From cases of domestic abuse, female genital mutilation, and forced marriage to horrific instances of religious and ritual-based death. It is important to note for those that they come up with different reasons or excuses that no demographic—regardless of age—seems immune to this pervasive issue. some recent

WELCOME TO 2026: LET'S RECAP

Above are some of the gender based compilations we made in 2025. nothing much has changed since ten but we remain optimistic that 2026 will be a favourable year for the girl-child and woman.

WHY WE NEED TO STOP ASKING, "WHAT WAS SHE WEARING?"

I have always questioned why most people target a rape victim whenever a sexual assault happens. Whenever a girl or woman is sexually assaulted, one question sadly pops up repeatedly: "What was she wearing?" I mean, why would anyone blame her to the extent of asking what she (the victim) was wearing at the time of the rape. A visit to the comment sections of different social media platforms and face to face conversations when there’s a rape report says a lot about the exist

Ending the Cycle: A Call to Protect Women and Girls in Nigeria

The landscape of safety for women and girls in Nigeria is increasingly concerning, marked by a disturbing rise in reports of sexual violence, abuse, and physical assault. From cases of domestic abuse and forced marriage to horrific instances of ritualistic violence, no demographic—regardless of age—seems immune to this pervasive issue. Recent reports paint a grim picture, with multiple incidents making headlines: * In Enugu, a father was arrested for the alleged defilement o

LOOKING BEYOND THE VISIBLE: Realities of Digital Gender-Based Violence

When most people think of gender-based violence (GBV), they immediately think of physical abuse. However, this is a dangerous misconception. GBV is far broader, and in today's interconnected world, digital platforms have become a significant source for new forms of violence against women and girls. Online platforms provide opportunities for: · Sextortion · Blackmail for money or sex · Online Harrassment and Bullying · Annonymous crime

IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS: A PREVENTABLE DEATH

I coudn't help but revisit this case the tragic story of Salome, a young woman who was killed by her boyfriend. It is a case in mind whenever we need to bring attention to the devastating consequences of toxic relationships and gender-based violence in Nigeria. The perpetrator, when confronted about his actions, offered the justification that he and his partner "don't have each other all the time." Is this enough to take another person's life? This heartbreaking event undersc

BREAKING THE SILENCE: WHY WE MUST PRIORITIZE GIRLS MENTAL HEALTH GIRLS

The month of May hosted the mental health awareness week and our focus at SACHEM was on why the mental health of girls should be priority. Mental health is as critical to overall well-being as physical health, yet it is often misunderstood—especially when it comes to girls. There is a persistent, harmful belief that if a person isn’t visibly struggling or in crisis, they cannot be experiencing mental health challenges. PERIOD POVERTY: THE SILENT BURDEN

In commemoration of the 'Menstrual Hygiene day,' It imperative to also highlight the issue of period poverty in Nigeria. This problem faced by a large number of school girls especially teenagers, represents more than a simple hygiene issue; it significantly hinders the educational and economic opportunities available to girls in Nigeria. Whether in urban slums or rural areas, millions of adolescent girls face the difficult choice each month between purchasing food and sanitar

CHANGING THE NARRATIVE: MODESTY IS STYLISH

Nowadays, if you scroll through Instagram or TikTok, or any other social media platform, you’ll notice that fashion seems to mean showing more and more skin. Many people say fashion means showing a lot of skin. It feels like a contest to see who can wear the least fabric. Everywhere we look, some girls and women wear clothes that are very revealing. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to show everything to look amazing. Modesty is not boring or old-fashioned. It is actually
